John Doe is Human
John Doe is a serial killer who elaborately plans his murders and bases each one on the Seven Deadly Sins. John Doe is a substandard man who took the world into his own hands, and decided to do God’s work to start destroying what he believed was the inferior parts of society. A monster is any creature, usually found in legends or horror fiction that is often hideous and may produce fear or physical harm by its appearance and its actions. (Monster, Wikepidea.) In this essay I will prove that John Doe is not a human monster or a lunatic, but a substandard man with morals, as Dennis Nilsen put it, “a mind can be evil without being abnormal.”

Many people would easily label John Doe as a monster, a lunatic and delusional, and they would deny the thought that a normal human being could commit such horrendous acts. As Doe says, "It's more comfortable for you to label me insane." The fact is that serial killers are rational, organized and calculative, not delusional or derailed. During the movie, Doe relates to the young Detective Mills multiple times, claiming that he's "not special" and that he's really no different from anyone else. Doe even recognizes his own deadly sin (envy) and punishes himself for it. John Doe was on a mission to make a moral statement so people would stop disobeying the way God wants humans to live. He may have been an extremist but he ultimately wanted to make the world a better place like any normal human being. A monster doesn’t have morals, it just inflicts physical harm. Though he himself hurt people, he believed it was the right thing to do because God has a standard of living and people were not meeting it. All people experience lack of control in their lives at some point, the way they regain control is the deciding factor for many killers. “Evil is the exercise of power.” (Philip Zimbardo.) John Doe must have felt appalled that the world was full of sin so he took initiative to take control and kill the people...
